Acceptance and Commitment Therapy

Acceptance therapy strives to help patients with the process of accepting situations and feelings as they come, without evaluating or attempting to change them. Through mindfulness exercises in and out of therapy, a skillset is developed to help deal with painful experiences, which leads to living healthier, fuller lives. ACT differs from CBT (cognitive behavioral theory) in that it does not directly attempt to change negative and distorted thinking but instead encourages those engaged in it to develop a new compassionate relationship with the experiences that perpetuate anxiety. Providing alternative solutions and loosening control that can be inherent with anxiety can begin to free those suffering from much of the stress that inhibits them from fully engaging and enjoying their lives.
