Kristen Lauer Psyd

I earned my doctorate in clinical psychology at Antioch University New England. Prior to joining RICA, I completed an APA-accredited pre-doctoral internship with Morrison Child and Family Services in Gresham, Oregon, followed by post-doctoral and licensed work with Mindsights, in Portland, Oregon. Recently, I returned to New England and am excited to be continuing both my therapeutic and assessment work with Rhode Island Counseling Associates. During my training, I have provided psychotherapy and assessment services in outpatient, community mental health, and private practice settings.

In both my assessment and therapeutic work, I take a humanistic and collaborative approach when working with clients. I truly believe that there is not one “best” type of therapy, but that different approaches to therapy work with some people, while other individuals may benefit from another approach. I am passionate about identifying individual strengths as well as supports in one’s environment to help clients and incorporating clients’ values and interests into our work together. Therapeutically, I especially enjoy using play therapy to enhance the relationship between young children and their caregivers while simultaneously processing the experience of parenting with the caregiver and incorporating skills in separate, parent-only sessions.

Assessment services I provide to adults include cognitive, executive functioning, learning disability, ADHD, and depression and anxiety evaluations. I also provide comprehensive psychological evaluations to children and youths ranging in age from 5 to 16, including assessment of mood- and trauma-related disorders as well as ADHD, learning disorders, neurodevelopmental disorders, cognitive/developmental delays, and autism spectrum disorders.  I believe that my academic and clinical training and experience in working with children, youth, families, and adults in both therapeutic and assessment environments, often enhances the therapeutic recommendations and conclusions in my psychological evaluations.

**Given concerns around COVID-19, I do not currently offer in-person play therapy sessions for families, though I continue to offer therapy via tele-health based around parenting and adjusting to this difficult time.**
