Adolescent Counseling (ages 13-18)

Adolescence is a difficult time full of angst and hormones. The desire to belong combined with a need for autonomy from parental interference and expectation can lead a child to become distant and disconnected from his family and friends.

Today’s teenagers are under a great deal of stress, frequently silenced by many social and family pressures. Providing teens with the opportunity to take ownership of their counseling allows them to develop skills that promote independence. Therapy for adolescents and teens can help them improve their interactions at home, school, within the family, with peers, and in social environments.

Common reasons adolescents/teens go to counseling:

  • Parents experience teen as being increasingly oppositional and defiant
  • School failure – drop in grades
  • Isolation
  • Struggles with peer relationships
  • Anxiety
  • Perfectionism
  • Depression
  • Self-harm behaviors
  • Stress management
  • Social skills
  • Lack of meaningful relationships
  • Trauma
  • Medical/physical illness
  • Parent separation & divorce

Professionals at Rhode Island Counseling Associates will work with the child to create trust and engagement. Therapy sessions involve the entire family, teaching skills that can help create connections between the child and the parents, strengthening the bonds of trust, and expanding opportunities for effective communication within the family.
